Looking for romantic things to do in Split, Croatia? Split may not be the first place that comes to mind for a couples trip. Dubrovnik and Hvar usually get more attention, but we were surprised by how much we enjoyed Split together.
There were plenty of moments that felt romantic without trying too hard. Dinner in the old stone streets, Aperol spritzes at sunset, and simply wandering through Diocletian’s Palace in the evening were some of the things we enjoyed most.
We visited Split as a couple in September 2026, and this guide includes the experiences we loved, along with a few things we would like to try on a future trip. 1. Stay Inside Diocletian’s Palace Walls
Where you sleep sets the tone for the whole trip, and staying inside Diocletian’s Palace made ours feel like another era. Our room had an actual key, not a keycard. One side looked out over the Riva Promenade, the other over a quiet stone alleyway inside the palace.
There’s something genuinely romantic about falling asleep inside walls that old, then stepping straight into the middle of the Old Town each morning. For couples, that atmosphere is worth prioritizing over square footage.

2. Get Lost Together in the Palace at Golden Hour
Some of our most romantic moments in Split weren’t planned at all. On our first evening, we didn’t map a single stop. We just walked, gelato in hand, getting a little lost inside the palace walls as the sky turned from gold to navy over the water.
Along the way, we stumbled onto a pop-up dance performance in one square and an outdoor outdoor piano concert on the Peristyle, right outside the cathedral. It turned out to be the Peristil Vibrez Festival.
The gelato became a nightly ritual too. At about €2.80 a scoop, a slow walk back through the lit-up lanes was our favorite dessert. The streets are cooler and calmer after dark, once the cruise-ship crowds leave.

3. Make Sunset on the Riva Your Nightly Ritual
We ended every evening with a drink on the Riva Promenade, watching the sky change color over the harbor. After a while, it was less about the drink and more about the ritual: a quiet moment together to close out the day before dinner.
The sun set around 7:30 PM during our September visit. Right around sunset, the air goes very still, which gives the whole waterfront a hush.

Couples tip: Want the sunset from higher up? The Vidilica terrace on Marjan Hill looks out over the city and harbor. We hiked Marjan in the morning to beat the heat (details in our [2-day itinerary]), but it’s a popular sunset spot for couples.
4. Have a Candlelit Dinner You Didn’t Plan
Our most romantic meal wasn’t the one we researched. It was the one we stumbled into. With no reservation, we wandered the palace lanes and found a small outdoor table on a quiet side street at Restaurant La Mia Storia. We split prawn risotto and large draft Pan beers in a setting that gave us a sense of privacy altough we were in the middle of everything.

Couples tip: Some of Split’s most romantic dinner spots never show up on “best restaurants” lists. They’re the side-street tables you only find by wandering.
5. Toast the View from a Rooftop Bar
For a dressier evening, trade the waterfront for a view from above. Several of Split’s boutique hotels have rooftop terraces overlooking the palace rooftops and the harbor, and sunset is the time to go. The rooftop at Heritage Hotel Santa Lucia and the rooftop bar at Cornaro Hotel are two of the best-known spots for a sunset cocktail together.

We’ll admit it, while in Split we stuck to Aperol spritzes, cocktails, and cold Pan beers, since we’d done plenty of wine elsewhere in Croatia. But if wine is your thing, order a glass of Plavac Mali, Croatia’s signature red, and toast the sunset the Croatian way.
6. Book a Tuk Tuk Tour
For couples who want to share an experience rather than just sightsee side by side, this was our favorite. On our second day, we booked a spontaneous tuk tuk tour near the Riva. Partway through, we grabbed Aperol spritzes to go and rode along the coast, taking in views of the city and water we’d never have found on foot, including a cliffside park where locals hold their weddings.

7. Take a Sunset Sail (Top of Our List for Next Time)
We didn’t get to this one, but it’s the first thing we’d book on a return trip. Small-group sunset sails leave from Split and glide along the coast as the sky changes color, often with wine included. Watching the sunset from the Riva was lovely; watching it from the water would be even more special.

8. Paddle a Glowing Night Kayak Tour
Split also offers evening tours in illuminated LED kayaks that paddle along the coastline after dark, with the city lights behind you. We didn’t have the energy for it this trip, and it’s the one we regret missing most.

9. Share the View from the Bell Tower
The bell tower of the Cathedral of St. Domnius, in the center of the palace, has one of the best panoramic views in Split: terracotta rooftops, the harbor, and the islands beyond. Go late in the day for softer light. The first stretch of steps is steep, so take it slow together.

10. Add an Island Escape to Hvar
If a couple of days leaves you wanting more time together, Hvar is an easy ferry ride from Split and adds a beautiful island chapter to a couples trip. Think harbor-side dinners, hidden coves, and sunset views from the island’s hilltop fortress.

- Dodge the cruise crowds. The palace lanes get packed when ships are in port. Save your romantic wandering for early morning or evening.
- Pace yourselves in the heat. Split gets hot, with very little shade. Do anything strenuous first thing in the morning, and save golden hour for the slow moments.
- Leave room for the unplanned. Our best moments, the wandering and the dinner we found by accident, weren’t in any plan.
