Taking the long flight to Maui from South Carolina started out as a “once-in-a-lifetime” trip and quickly turned into a recurring addiction. That gives you a full day for the Road to Hana (which truly cannot be rushed), a dedicated morning for the Haleakala sunrise, at least two proper beach days, a sunset cruise, and a couple of slower evenings for long dinners and wandering. You won’t feel like you’re running from place to place, and you won’t feel like you’ve missed anything major. If you can swing ten nights, you’ll have room for the helicopter tour, a day trip to Lanai, upcountry exploring, and still have downtime.
Do couples really need to rent a car?
Yes, this comes up constantly in forums from people hoping the answer might be no. For couples who want to experience more than the immediate area around their resort pool, a rental car is non-negotiable. The Road to Hana is impossible without one.
