Taking the long flight to Maui from South Carolina started out as a “once-in-a-lifetime” trip and quickly turned into a recurring addiction. Part of that is the island itself , the beauty every where you look, the smell of plumeria mixed with the ocean, in the trade winds, the fact that you can go from a volcanic summit to a jungle waterfall to a white sand beach all in a single afternoon.

The other part of it  is my cousin. He moved to Maui years ago and never left. He plays guitar at a few of the local spots around Lahaina and Kihei, knows every hidden beach and back road on the island, and has made every trip feel less like a touristy trip and more like a homecoming. When he says “skip the guidebook version and go here instead,” we listen.

This post is a combination of both  the classic romantic Maui experiences that absolutely live up to the hype, and the under-the-radar gems that most visitors never find. If you’re planning a couples trip to Maui, this is your guide.

Why Maui Is One of the Most Romantic Destinations in the World for Couples

Maui earns its reputation as a top destination for couples. No island in Hawaii and arguably no island anywhere, balances luxury, adventure, and seclusion quite the way Maui does. You can wake up to a sunrise above the clouds at 10,000 feet, spend the afternoon snorkeling a volcanic crater, and end the night at an open-air restaurant with a sunset view and fresh-caught fish on your plate.

Whether you’re celebrating an engagement, honeymoon, anniversary, or simply wanting to reconnect somewhere extraordinary, the romantic things to do in Maui for couples are genuinely endless. Maui has something that makes each half of a couple feel like the trip was designed specifically for them. It’s a big reason we keep coming back.

Most Romantic Things to Do in Maui for Couples

1. Watch the Sunrise at Haleakalā National Park

If you do one thing in Maui as a couple, make it this. Standing above the clouds at the Haleakalā summit as the sky turns from deep violet to burning orange is genuinely one of the most awe-inspiring moments we’ve experienced anywhere in the world. The summit sits at over 10,000 feet, and on a clear morning you’re literally watching the sun rise above a sea of clouds. It’s one of those things to do in Maui for couples that creates a shared memory you’ll talk about for years.

What to know before you go:

Reservations are required and sell out weeks in advance. Book at recreation.gov the moment you know your travel dates.
It’s cold up there (30s–40s°F at sunrise). Bring layers you weren’t expecting to need in Hawaii.
Guided sunrise tours are available if you’d rather not drive the dark winding road yourself is often worth it.

2. Stargaze at Haleakalā Summit

Stargazing at Haleakalā is one of the most romantic things to do in Maui for couples and one of the most underrated. Maui’s remote Pacific location puts you far from light pollution, and from the 10,000-foot summit the Milky Way is so vivid it barely looks real. The summit is open for stargazing after the sunset crowd departs, often with far fewer visitors than sunrise. Bring blankets, something warm to drink, and prepare to feel very small and very close to each other at the same time.

3. Take a Sunset Sail or Dinner Cruise

There is something undeniably romantic about watching the sun melt into the Pacific from the deck of a sailboat with a glass of something cold in your hand. A sunset cruise is a classic among things to do in Maui for couples. Maui has options ranging from large catamarans to intimate private charters.

The best romantic Maui sunset cruises typically include:

Champagne, cocktails, or an open bar
Dinner or chef-prepared appetizers
Whale watching from November through April which is a jaw-dropping bonus if your timing works out
Spinner dolphins playing in the bow wake are common on the West Maui coast

4. Stroll the Beach at Sunset – Especially Kaanapali

One of the most simple and genuinely romantic things to do in Maui for couples costs nothing at all. Take a long, unhurried beach walk at golden hour. Kaanapali Beach on the West Shore is a favorite. It is three miles of white sand and turquoise water, with a scenic boardwalk that lets you take in the whole stretch as the light goes golden.

At the north end of Kaanapali, the nightly cliff dive ceremony at Black Rock is worth timing your walk around. A torch-bearer lights torches along the lava point and dives gracefully into the ocean at dusk. It’s a small, beautiful piece of local tradition.

5. Book a Couples Spa Treatment – Ideally Oceanfront

Couples spa treatments in Maui are a must on any romantic itinerary. Maui’s resort spas are genuinely world-class, and many offer open-air treatment rooms where you can hear the ocean while you’re being worked on. Hawaiian lomi lomi massage, hot stone treatments, and ocean scrubs using local volcanic ingredients are all worth exploring.

The Spa at Four Seasons Wailea – oceanside treatments and impeccable service
Kilolani Spa at Grand Wailea – three couples’ treatment rooms and two deluxe couples’ suites with hydrothermal gardens
Spa Montage at Kapalua Bay- private outdoor hale (hut) experiences by the ocean

6. Have a Romantic Oceanfront Dinner (and Seek Out Live Music)

Dining in Maui is a full experience — fresh fish caught that morning, Pacific Rim influences, open-air settings with sea breezes, and often live Hawaiian music drifting in from somewhere nearby. Romantic dinners are among the best things to do in Maui for couples, and you don’t need to rush. It’s meant to be lingered over.

Our top picks for a romantic Maui dinner for couples:

Mama’s Fish House (Paia) – a Maui institution, oceanfront, wildly romantic, and fish listed by name and where it was caught. Reserve far in advance.
Merriman’s Maui (Kapalua) – farm-to-table excellence with stunning sunset views over Kapalua Bay
Hali’imaile General Store (Upcountry) – exceptional food in a historic 100-year-old upcountry building
Monkeypod Kitchen (Wailea/Kihei) – great cocktails, excellent food, and often live music

Our tradition: When my cousin is playing a show, we always go. There’s something special about watching live Hawaiian music in a small venue is far more intimate than a luau stage show and a genuine window into local culture. Ask around because local musicians rotate through the smaller restaurants and bars in Kihei and Pā’ia, or check out Levi Poasa

7. Book a Couples Photography Session

One of the most popular things to do in Maui for couples on a honeymoon or anniversary is booking a professional photo session. A skilled Maui photographer knows exactly where to be at golden hour from the cliff above Pāpalaua Beach, to the bamboo forest just off the Road to Hana. The results are typically the best photos a couple will have of themselves, taken in one of the world’s most photogenic settings. And of course, it makes for a great souvenir that will always bring back great memories.

Many photographers also offer “adventure sessions”. Examples of this would be sunrise on Haleakalā, waterfall hikes, or kayak shoots on the water. If there’s ever a time to invest in it, a couples trip to Maui is it.

8. Arrange a Luxury Beach Picnic

For a truly memorable and romantic thing to do in Maui for couples, a luxury beach picnic setup is one of those experiences that photographs beautifully and feels even better in person. Several Maui companies will set up a full romantic spread right on the beach. These usually include a low boho table, floor cushions, fresh flower arrangements, charcuterie, champagne, lighting, and decoration. The companies clean everything up when you’re done. All you have to do is show up, put your phones down, and be present with each other on one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world. It’s exactly as good as it sounds.

For a more budget friendly approach, grab a large beach towel or blanket and either some dinner from the grocery store or order some take out ahead of time. Head down to the beach at sunset.

Unique Things to Do in Maui for Couples

9. Drive the Road to Hana– the right way

The Road to Hana is genuinely one of the great scenic drives in the world and an absolute must among things to do in Maui for couples who want adventure. More than 600 curves, dozens of one-lane bridges, waterfalls falling directly onto the roadside, bamboo forests so dense they block the sky, black sand beaches, and sea cliffs that’ll make your stomach drop. As a shared adventure, it’s hard to beat.

How to do it right as a couple:
Leave by 7am to stay ahead of traffic and get parking at the main stops
Don’t try to “complete” the road. Stop when something looks interesting, linger where you fall in love with a spot
Pack your own food and snacks. Options along the way are limited and often crowded
Consider staying overnight in Hana and driving back the next morning. The reverse direction reveals completely different views which are often overlooked!

10. Snorkel Molokini Crater

Molokini is a partially submerged volcanic crater about three miles off the Maui coast and one of the clearest, most spectacular snorkeling spots in Hawaii. Visibility regularly exceeds 100 feet, and the marine life includes over 250 species of fish, green sea turtles, and eagle rays. This is one of the best and most uniquely romantic things to do in Maui for couples who love the ocean.

Most tours depart from Ma’alaea Harbor in the early morning. Book with a reputable operator that keeps group sizes manageable (Pacific Whale Foundation and Pride of Maui both get solid reviews). Floating in that impossibly clear water together, watching a sea turtle glide past, is the kind of experience that becomes a shared memory you’ll reference for years.

11. Snorkel Turtle Town and Swim with Sea Turtles

For couples who want a more intimate sea turtle encounter than a large Molokini tour, Turtle Town is a stretch of reef along the South Maui coast near Makena. It is one of the most reliably magical spots to snorkel in Hawaii. Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu) rest on the sandy bottom and swim slowly along the reef, completely unbothered by snorkelers who keep a respectful distance. Many independent snorkel tours combine Molokini and Turtle Town in a single morning trip.

12. Take a Helicopter Tour Over the Island

Nothing reframes your understanding of Maui’s scale like seeing it from the air. A helicopter tour is one of the most dramatic and memorable romantic things to do in Maui for couples. This tour will reveal waterfalls hidden deep in valleys that no trail reaches, the full crater of Haleakalā from above, the dramatic sea cliffs of the North Shore, and the breadth of the Hana coastline all at once. Several operators offer the chance to add a Molokai flyover for even more stunning scenery.

Blue Hawaiian Helicopters and Maverick Helicopters both operate out of Kahului Airport and are well-regarded. Open-door tours are available if you want unobstructed views and don’t mind the wind in your face. Yes, it’s expensive. It’s also one of those things to do in Maui for couples where we’ve never heard anyone say “that wasn’t worth it.”

13. Go Whale Watching (November – April)

Maui sits within the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, and between November and April the waters around the island fill with thousands of North Pacific humpback whales that come to breed and calve. Watching a 40-ton whale breach thirty feet off the side of a boat stops you cold. For couples visiting in winter, this is one of the most awe-inspiring things to do in Maui. There is nothing that quite prepares you for the moment it happens.

Book a small-group or private tour if you can. The experience is far more intimate and the guides far more knowledgeable than the big party boats. On our cruise, we were even able to put an instrument in the water to hear the whales calling to each other. It was absolutely amazing!

Many sunset cruise operators also include whale watching as a bonus feature during the season.

Best Adventure Activities for Couples in Maui

14. Hike Together -Maui Has Trails for Every Level

Maui’s trail system is one of the best-kept secrets for couples who want to explore beyond the beach. A few of our favourite things to do in Maui for couples who love the outdoors:

Waihee Ridge Trail – one of the best hikes on the island, with panoramic views of the West Maui Mountains and ocean. Moderately challenging, totally worth it.
Pipiwai Trail- through a cathedral bamboo forest to the 400-foot Waimoku Falls. One of the most stunning hikes in all of Hawaii if the pools are accessible.
Bamboo forest trails along Hana Highway – eerie, beautiful, and unlike anything most people associate with Hawaii.

15. Take a Surf Lesson Together

Learning something new together is one of the best things you can do as a couple, and Maui is one of the world’s great surfing destinations. Beginner lessons along the calmer south and west shores are accessible regardless of fitness level, and the shared laughter of repeatedly wiping out is worth all the salt water. Most surf schools offer 90-minute to two-hour group or private lessons. Private lessons are more expensive but make the experience noticeably more romantic and personal.

16. Go Horseback Riding Through Maui’s Upcountry

Maui’s upcountry consists of rolling green slopes of Haleakalā above the tourist coastline, is cooler, quieter, and strikingly beautiful. Horseback riding through ranch land with views stretching across to the ocean on both sides of the island is one of those romantic things to do in Maui for couples that most visitors overlook entirely. Pi’iholo Ranch offers guided rides through this landscape. It’s a side of Maui that feels a world away from the resorts below, and the contrast makes it even more special.

17. Kayak and Paddleboard at Sunrise as you Watch for Sea Turtles

The warm, clear water along Maui’s south and west shores is ideal for kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding. Doing it at sunrise with the island waking up around you is even more romantic. If you’re lucky, you’ll spot Hawaiian green sea turtles resting near the shoreline. They’re protected and unafraid of humans; watch from a respectful distance and let the moment come to you. This is one of those free and spontaneous things to do in Maui for couples that often becomes the highlight of the trip.

18. Try Upcountry Maui Golf

For couples where one of you plays golf or where both of you want an excuse to spend a morning somewhere stunning, Maui’s golf courses rank among the most beautiful in the world. Kaanapali Golf Course and the Plantation Course and Bay Course at Kapalua all offer ocean views from nearly every hole, with the kind of scenery that makes even a bad round feel like a good day. Non-golfers can easily occupy themselves in the golf cart with a mimosa and some very scenic admiring.

Cultural Experiences Worth Having in Maui for Couples

19. Attend a Traditional Hawaiian Luau

A luau is a rite of passage in Hawaii and one of the most popular things to do in Maui for couples on a first visit. Polynesian dance, imu ceremony (underground roasted kalua pig), traditional Hawaiian foods, and cultural storytelling that gives real context to the islands’ history.

Old Lahaina Luau was long considered the gold standard, but the 2023 Lahaina fires changed the landscape significantly. Check current offerings from Feast at Lele, Drums of the Pacific at the Hyatt Regency, and Maui Nui Luau, all of which have strong reputations. Whatever you choose, look for a luau that emphasizes cultural authenticity over spectacle.

20. Visit a Lavender Farm or Chocolate Plantation

Maui’s upcountry is home to some genuinely special agricultural stops that feel a world away from the beach scene below. They’re among our favorite romantic things to do in Maui for couples who want something slower and different. Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm sits at 4,000 feet on the slopes of Haleakalā and is extraordinarily peaceful. It has acres of blooming lavender with panoramic views across the island. Maui’s chocolate farms offer tours and tastings of single-origin cacao grown on the island. Unhurried, fragrant, and genuinely lovely.

21. Seek Out Live Local Music – Not Just at the Resorts

This one is personal for us. My cousin has been playing music on Maui for years, and he’s introduced us to a side of the island’s culture that most tourists miss entirely. Small venues in Kihei, Pā’ia, and what remains of the Lahaina music scene host local Hawaiian musicians playing traditional and contemporary music in settings that feel genuinely intimate, and this is one of the most special and free things to do in Maui for couples who want to experience the real island.

Ask your hotel concierge, check the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s calendar, or simply walk until you hear something you like. Some of our best Maui evenings as a couple have started that way. We would recommend seeing if Levi Poasa is playing anywhere.

22. Find Your Beach – Maui Has One for Every Mood

Choosing the right beach is one of the most important things to do in Maui for couples, because the island’s coastline is extraordinarily varied. Knowing which beach matches the mood of your day changes the whole experience.

Wailea Beach – calm, clear, framed by luxury resorts. Perfect for a slow, resort-style romantic beach day
Napili Bay – quieter and more intimate, with excellent snorkeling and a laid-back locals vibe
Hamoa Beach – near Hana, strikingly beautiful and often uncrowded. One of the best payoffs of driving the Road to Hana
Makena (Big Beach) – large, dramatic, and raw. Great for walking the shore and feeling the scale of the place
Kaanapali Beach – wide, white, and iconic. Ideal for the full Maui resort experience

Practical Travel Tips for Couples Planning a Maui Trip

Best time to visit: April–May and September–October offer excellent weather with smaller crowds and lower rates than peak winter and summer season

Rent a car: Non-negotiable. Maui is not a walk-everywhere or rideshare island. You need a car to explore, and you’ll want to.

Book early: Haleakalā sunrise reservations, whale watching tours, popular restaurants, and helicopter tours all sell out well in advance

Balance your days: Mix a big adventure day (Road to Hana, helicopter) with a slow beach and dinner day. The pacing matters enormously.

Lahaina context: The 2023 wildfires devastated Lahaina. Recovery is ongoing and Front Street businesses are returning. However, check current conditions before planning around specific Lahaina spots.

Respect the ‘Āina: Hawaiian culture places deep importance on caring for the land and sea. Don’t stand on coral, stay on marked trails, keep a respectful distance from wildlife, and leave every place better than you found it.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Best Things to do in Maui for Couples

How many days do couples need in Maui?

Any amount of time you can spend in Maui is better then no time. That being said, seven nights is the sweet spot that most experienced Maui travelers recommend for couples, and it’s what we’d suggest for a first trip. That gives you a full day for the Road to Hana (which truly cannot be rushed), a dedicated morning for the Haleakala sunrise, at least two proper beach days, a sunset cruise, and a couple of slower evenings for long dinners and wandering. You won’t feel like you’re running from place to place, and you won’t feel like you’ve missed anything major. If you can swing ten nights, you’ll have room for the helicopter tour, a day trip to Lanai, upcountry exploring, and still have downtime.

Do couples really need to rent a car?

Yes, this comes up constantly in forums from people hoping the answer might be no. For couples who want to experience more than the immediate area around their resort pool, a rental car is non-negotiable. The Road to Hana is impossible without one. Haleakala requires one unless you book a guided tour. The hidden beaches, the upcountry lavender farms, the best local restaurants in Paia and Kihei, none of these are reachable without wheels.

The one exception is Kaanapali, which has enough walkable beach, restaurants, and resort amenities that you could technically survive a short stay without a car, but you’d be missing most of what makes Maui worth the trip. Book your car early , go for a compact or mid-size rather than an expensive SUV, and rent for the full duration of your stay. The freedom it gives you as a couple is one of the things you’ll appreciate most.

What’s the best time of year for a couples trip to Maui?

There are really no “bad” times to go to Maui. April–May and September–October are the sweet spots with warm, sunny weather, smaller crowds than peak summer and winter, and noticeably lower hotel rates. These shoulder seasons are when Maui is at its most relaxed and most affordable, and they’re the windows we now aim for on most trips. That said, December through April has its own compelling argument which is whale season.

Roughly 10,000 North Pacific humpback whales migrate to the waters around Maui each winter to breed and calve, and watching them breach from a boat (or even from the shore) is one of the most genuinely awe-inspiring things to do in Maui for couples.

Peak summer (July–August) means crowded beaches and premium prices, but the energy is high and the weather is consistently gorgeous. Maui is a year-round destination, so the question is really what kind of experience you want, and which trade-off between price, crowds, and seasonal bonuses works best for your trip.

Is the Road to Hana worth it for couples, or is it overhyped?

It’s worth it, with one important caveat. The caveat is it rewards those who approach it the right way. Leave early (by 7am), don’t try to rush to a destination at the end, pack your own food, and be willing to stop whenever something looks interesting. If you treat it as a race to the finish, or try to squeeze it into half a day, it’ll feel long and tiring. If you allow time to enjoy the hidden spots you find along the way, it is well worth it!

The Road to Hana is one of the most spectacular scenic drives in the world, and as a shared experience for a couple it’s genuinely hard to beat with over 600 curves, dozens of waterfalls, bamboo forests so thick they block the sky, black sand beaches, and sea cliffs that’ll make you stare in awe. For couples who enjoy exploring together, stopping on a whim, and letting a day unfold rather than follow a schedule, it can become the highlight of the entire trip.

Wrapping Things Up: The Best Things to do in Maui for Couples

In Maui, the landscapes are genuinely extraordinary, the food is excellent, the water is clear, and the aloha spirit is real. That is why it will continue to remain high on the list of the world’s most romantic destinations for couples.

Whether you’re chasing the most adventurous or most relaxing things to do in Maui for couples, the island has a version of that for you. The sunrise above the clouds at Haleakalā, the waterfall at the end of the Hana highway, the turtle surfacing beside your kayak at dawn are all the kinds of thing you come home talking about and eventually start planning to do again.

We’ll see you on the island!
