Folly Beach has a laid-back, surf-town vibe and attracts a lively spring break crowd.

What to know:

  • Arrive before 10am for parking. There are paid parking lots as well as metered street parking near most beach accesses. If you arrive early enough, or get lucky, you can park in the several spots available by most of the beach accesses, otherwise, it’s likely you’ll have to walk a bit to get to a beach access.
  • Center Street is the main hub. You’ll find food, drinks, coffee, ice cream, and shops.
  • Great for beach bars + casual dining.

Sullivan’s Island : Best for Quiet & Upscale Feel

Sullivan’s Island is quieter and a bit less touristy. It’s perfect for couples or a relaxed beach day.

**Note that there are no public bathrooms on Sullivan’s Island. If you need to use the restroom, you’ll have to buy a snack or drink at a local establishment in order to use their facilities.

Explore Historic Downtown Charleston

No spring break in Charleston is complete without wandering downtown. While you’re exploring, don’t miss Charleston’s hidden alleyways and secret streets that most tourists overlook.

Shop King Street

It’s perfect for a mid-afternoon break between sightseeing. Starting at Broad St. you will find antique stores and art galleries. As you get closer to Market St. you will find boutiques and luxury brands as well as restaurants. Past Calhoun St. you will continue to find boutiques and restaurants as well as bars and clubs.

On the second Sunday of the month, from 12-5, King Street (from Queen St. to Calhoun St.) shuts down to cars and the street is open for walking. Street side vendors set up shop and restaurants bring out additional seating for the street. In 2026, this will take place on March 8th and April 12th. This is a great time to enjoy shopping on King Street.

Shem Creek in Mount Pleasant is a spring break favorite for waterfront dining and dolphin sightings. It’s a short drive over the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge, about 6 miles from historic downtown to Shem Creek. If you drive, there is a parking garage available and some of the restaurants have on-site parking. Both fill up quickly on busy nights.

3-Day Charleston Spring Break Itinerary

Day 1: Historic Charleston & Rooftop Nights

Morning – Downtown on Foot

Start your day early, ideally before 9am, when the streets are quiet and the light is golden. Begin at The Battery and walk along the waterfront before heading up to Rainbow Row for photos. From there, weave through Waterfront Park and stop at the Pineapple Fountain. This walk takes about an hour and sets the tone for the entire trip. If you’d prefer some local insight and history, take a guided walking tour.

From there, make your way to Charleston City Market. It opens early and is worth at least 30–45 minutes before the crowds arrive.

Afternoon – King Street

After lunch, spend your afternoon on King Street. Start at Broad Street and work your way north. The lower stretch has antique shops and art galleries, while the middle section near Market Street is where you’ll find boutiques, a few luxury brands, and some of the best people-watching in the city. Past Calhoun the energy shifts, more casual boutiques, bars starting to open, and a noticeably younger crowd.

Budget about 2–3 hours here depending on how much you like to shop.

Evening – Rooftop Cocktails & Dinner End your first night with rooftop cocktails at sunset. If the weather is nice, this is non-negotiable! Charleston has several great rooftop options depending on your vibe and budget. After drinks, head to dinner. Tonight is a good night to try somewhere on the nicer end since you’ll have the most energy of your trip.

Day 2 : Beach Morning, Shem Creek & Sunset on the Harbor

Day 2 is your most active day and the one most people say is their favorite.

Morning – Beach Time

Head to the beach early. Which beach you choose matters more than people realize, and it depends entirely on your group’s vibe. Folly Beach is your best bet if you want energy, beach bars, and a social atmosphere. Isle of Palms is the move for families or anyone who wants more space and a cleaner shoreline. Sullivan’s Island sits in between. It’s quieter, beautiful, and a little more upscale in feel, but has less amenities.

Plan to arrive by 9–9:30am if you’re driving, especially on a weekend. Parking fills up fast during spring break and there’s no good workaround other than arriving early.

Afternoon – Shem Creek

After the beach, clean up and head to Shem Creek in Mount Pleasant, about 15–20 minutes from downtown. This is one of those spots that feels like a locals’ secret even though it isn’t. You will find waterfront restaurants, kayak rentals, dolphins swimming through, and a genuinely beautiful setting.

If your group is up for it, go on a kayak or paddleboard tour before lunch. By mid-afternoon the water is at its best and the creek is calm enough for beginners.

Plan to linger here through the late afternoon. The sunset views from the docks are worth staying for.

Evening – Harbor Sunset Cruise

This is the single experience I recommend booking before anything else for spring break. The Charleston Harbor Sunset Cruise takes you past Fort Sumter, under the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge, and along the downtown skyline as the sun sets. It’s genuinely stunning and works for every type of group.

Day 3: Gardens, History & a Proper Send-Off Dinner

Your last day slows down on purpose. After two busy days, Day 3 is about savoring Charleston before you leave.

Morning – Magnolia Plantation & Gardens

If you visit Charleston in late March or early April, Magnolia Plantation is at or near peak azalea bloom and it is one of the most beautiful places you will ever walk through. Arrive when it opens to beat the tour groups. Give yourself at least two hours. The swamp garden alone is worth the trip, and the wildlife sightings (herons, turtles, alligators) are a genuine bonus.

If gardens aren’t your thing, this morning slot is also a good time to take the ferry to Fort Sumter, especially if anyone in your group is into history. Book ferry tickets in advance during spring break week.

Afternoon – Lunch with a View

Head back toward downtown for a long, leisurely lunch. Fleet Landing is my top pick for this moment in the trip because it sits right on the water, the porch is one of the best seats in the city, and the seafood is exactly what your last afternoon in Charleston should taste like.

After lunch, use the remaining time to wander. Go back to any neighborhood you didn’t fully explore, pick up a few last souvenirs from City Market, or just sit at Waterfront Park and watch the boats.

Evening – Send-Off Dinner

Don’t leave Charleston without one proper dinner that does the city justice. Tonight is the night for Henry’s Seafood, Poogan’s Porch, or SNOB, all classic Charleston, all worth dressing up slightly for, and all requiring a reservation you should have already made before your trip.

End the night on King Street. Whether that means one more rooftop drink or a late night out depends entirely on your group, but either way, you’ve done Charleston right.
